Can I set JBOD and RAID10 at the same time on the NAS?

18 April 2024 @ 12:06 am

I am looking to buy ASUSTOR's FS6712X NAS, and 12 of 2TB NVME SSD and now have a question about the RAID settings. Is it possible to set JBOD and RAID10 at the same time? So like having 12TB capacity of drive just show up on the computer and use it like just a one drive, with having RAID setted up so it has backup on RAIDed drives. I assume it can "technically" be done, but I was not able to find anything about this. Or if there is other recommendation, or if there is something I am wrong about, I would like to know about it.

How to get stock quotes in KMyMoney, GNUCash, or other programs using old/broken perl Finance::Quote

17 April 2024 @ 11:38 pm

Many free applications like KMyMoney and GNUCash use the perl libary Finance::Quote to get stock, bond, and currency quotes from various websites. However, those websites often change their public-facing URLs, breaking this functionality for these applications. As a result, people using long-term support Linux distributions for their stability may be left with broken software as a result. This recently happened with my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS distro while I was testing KMyMoney. The application installed with version 1.51 of Finance::Quote (libfinance-quote-perl) from 2021 onto the system, but a newer version was required due to recent changes on Yahoo. You can verify the installed version of this library with this simple command: perl -MFinance::Quote -e 'print "$Finance::Quote::VERSION\n"' If you have GNUCash installed, you can also verify that this is the problem with the following command (replace

Does Windows 10 hibernation require the swap file to be on the system partition?

17 April 2024 @ 8:30 pm

Hibernation works fine on my Windows 10 laptop, if pagefile.sys is on the system partition. If I instead move it to a dedicated partition, the laptop hangs during resuming with the Windows logo on the screen; the spinner under it never shows up. I have two SSDs and an NVMe in my laptop. My system partition is mirrored between the SSDs. I just added the NVMe. My intent was to use the NVMe as a dedicated swap drive. Unfortunately, resume no longer works. I tested creating dedicated partitions on the SSDs for the swap file and resume doesn't work with it there either. Resume works fine once I moved it back to the system partition. I have fast startup disabled, and I tried disabling and reenabling hibernate. Is this a Windows limitation or am I running into some other problem?

China still ASML’s biggest market, but falling sales cause drop in profit

17 April 2024 @ 3:00 pm

Europe’s most valuable tech company saw orders fall to €3.6bn in the first quarter of 2024, down from €9.2bn in the previous quarter. Its net profit also dropped to €1.2bn — a 37% decrease compared to Q4 2023. “We see 2024 as a transition,” ASML’s President and CEO Peter Wennink said in a statement. Wennink expects a stronger second half of the year “in line with the industry’s continued recovery from the downturn.” Interestingly, China represented ASML’s largest market…

In biggest-ever election year, tech platforms are wide open for voter manipulation

The tools provide libraries of data about online adverts. By exploring the repositories, researchers can identify the funders and techniques behind the ads. At least, that’s the idea. The libraries are obligatory under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), a law designed to safeguard online environments. By shining a light on ad content and targeting, the EU hopes to tackle disinformation and manipulation. The impact could be global. Because platforms often respond to international…
