How to clear persistent "Normal" style, after exporting from Google Docs

24 April 2024 @ 1:23 am

All right, this is really bugging me. I started a document in Google Docs and worked on it for several weeks. Finally needing some more advanced formatting options, I exported it to a Microsoft Word .docx file and opened it in the desktop app Microsoft Word 365 for Enterprise (Version 2403, Build 17425.20176 Click-to-Run). From the moment I first did the import, I noticed there was something "off". The text had a background color: enter image description here It's barely noticeable, but it's enough to really niggle my OCD. Especially when I discovered I couldn't remove it. It seems to be "burned into" the "Normal" style. enter image description here

According to this post, I used Shutter Encoder, but only some of its versions work for this purpose on Mac. Instead of using Shutter Encoder on Mac, I want to use ffmpeg on my Linux PC. Shutter Encoder uses the following command in the background: ffmpeg -threads 0 -hwaccel none -i input.mov -c:v hevc_videotoolbox -alpha_quality 1 -b:v 1000k -profile:v main -level 5.2 -map v:0 -an -pix_fmt yuva420p -sws_flags bicubic -tag:v hvc1 -metadata creation_time=2024-04-14T14:53:08.734684Z -y output.mp4 which yields the following output on my PC: ffmpeg version 4.4.

I'm stumped on this one. I have a new 16 TB external HDD. I connected it dropped some files on it, safely removed etc. Now when I hook it back up it shows as a GPT protected partition, all 16 TB. I can't assign it a drive access it via third party software, CLI etc. All options in disk management are greyed out: Greyed out options I just can't access the drive. Tried several machines, Linux and windows no dice. Even to format from CLI it isn't an option to access. Any suggestions?

How can I create a multiline text-area input field in Microsoft Word 365?

23 April 2024 @ 11:52 pm

I'm using Office 365. MS Word comes with a Plain Text Content Control command that creates a field that accepts text input from those who view the Word document. Example: screenshot of the Plain Text Control Element This input field will expand to the size of the input and will wrap if the input is long enough, but it does not accept newline characters (pressing Return/Enter or pasting a newline does not work to create a line break). I need to figure out how to create a text input field that allows line breaks to be inserted. This would be similar to the HTML <textarea> input. The solution needs to be natively supported and anything that's already pre-written would take precedence over making a new macro.

So, I must enable the device manually every time I boot to Ubuntu. How do I fix this?

Avoiding accidental execution of python scripts as bash scripts

22 April 2024 @ 8:41 am

I like to run my python scripts directly in bash like so $ ./script.py But sometimes I forget the shebang line #!/usr/bin/env python3, and it has the potential to overwrite a file named np if the script has import numpy as np (and if you click a few times when the ImageMagick import command is run). What can I do to avoid such accidental execution of python scripts as bash scripts? Is there a way (shell option or .bashrc scripts) to block bash from executing a script that has an extension ".py" as a bash script? Or indeed, block any execution of scripts that do not have a shebang line? (This question was closed on StackOverflow because it is not as related to programming as the community liked.)

Chip giant ASML plans Eindhoven expansion in big win for Dutch tech

23 April 2024 @ 3:09 pm

In a major win for the Dutch tech industry, chip giant ASML intends to remain and further expand in the Netherlands. The chip machine manufacturer has signed a non-binding letter of intent with the City Council of Eindhoven, eyeing a potential expansion at the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC), west of the city. Located at Eindhoven’s Brainport region — a major tech and innovation hub in Europe — BIC is dedicated to the high-tech manufacturing industry. For ASML, BIC represents an “interesting option,” Roger Dassen, the company’s CFO, said in a statement. That’s because of the campus’ close proximity to Veldhoven, where…

EU threatens to suspend ‘addictive’ TikTok feature by end of today

Yesterday, the EU issued TikTok an ultimatum. The Chinese-owned social media app was given just 24 hours to outline the mental health risks related to its new app TikTok Lite or face huge daily fines. This is the EU’s second probe into TikTok under the Digital Service Act (DSA). The DSA is a new law to protect users from harmful or illegal online content. It requires large platforms like TikTok to submit a risk assessment before launching any major new features. The EU’s latest gripe with the Chinese-owned company is over TikTok Lite. The barebones version of the regular app…This story continues at The Next W

UK law firm Austen Hays filed the claim at London’s High Court yesterday. Aside from medical facts, this includes info about people’s ethnicity, sex life, and sexual orientation.  “Our clients have experienced significant distress over their highly sensitive and private information being shared without…

Is this the future of coffee? Kaffa Roastery releases AI-conic blend

22 April 2024 @ 4:35 pm

I am really into (my friends might say somewhat obsessed with) coffee. Not just for the hits of caffeine that fuel our productivity-enthralled capitalist society, but also for the taste, as well as different styles of brewing (although my Swedish roots make me partial to a pour-over).  Sadly, I do not often get to write about it, as — even though coffee roasting and brewing rely on technological engineering — tech startups and coffee hardly ever intersect in the news. Enter Helsinki-based Kaffa Roastery, and its new blend of beans called AI-conic.  The blend for the coffee (which costs €12.90…

The first true software giant was becoming a big tech dinosaur. Fast forward to 2024 and Microsoft is the planet’s most valuable business. Under the leadership of CEO Satya Nadella, stock has soared by over 1,000% in 10 years. In January, the company reached a $3 trillion market cap — larger than the whole GDP of France. At the heart of the comeback is artificial intelligence. Microsoft has embedded AI across the Azure cloud computing platform,…

The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have been something of a pleasant surprise. They make videos, take photos, livestream and act as an adequate replacement for headphones, all while looking like a normal pair of sunglasses. However, everyone’s been waiting for the addition of multimodal AI after early access testing began in January. Now it’s here. What is multimodal AI? 23 April 2024 @ 5:15 pm

After asserting itself as an overshadowing presence in retail, Amazon is still experimenting with ways to leave a similar mark in groceries. The company’s latest tweak to its service lowers the minimum price for free grocery deliveries to $35. However, most customers using the service will also need to pay a $10 monthly subscription in addition to having a Prime membership ($15 monthly or $139 annually). To participate, you must live in one of the 3,500 supported cities and towns in the US. (When signing up, it will let you know if your primary shipping address isn’t supported.) 23 April 2024 @ 2:58 pm

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is only a few weeks away, but the company simply can't wait that long to make some more announcements. It has scheduled a virtual event for May 7. That indicates the event is very likely going to be focused on iPad. Rumors have been

If you use Sonos speakers, chances are you’ve used their app and encountered at least a little frustration at some point. I don’t think it’s a bad app when you consider the many functions it needs to juggle: finding and playing music from dozens of services, managing multiple connected speakers, running people through setup and troubleshooting and so on. But at the very least, it’s fair to suggest that it’s a little long in the tooth. Sonos knows this, too, and is announcing a totally new app for Android and iOS that was written from the ground up. It’ll be available on May 7.
