Slave Zero X Review (PC)

27 March 2024 @ 12:13 pm

A dash and some fast slashes are keeping both the lance-wielding battle maidens and the hammer-equipped hulking proto-Space Marines in check. Of course, more are jumping into the fray, and they are coming from both sides of the screen. That makes it impossible to develop very long combo chains as I switch between groups. But it also means the lot of them have not managed to touch my Slave unit and it’s unlikely that any will until the end of this fight. I know I’m not performing to the game’s high standards when it comes to style, but I really want to get through the level without a scratch. I’m pretty sure the big upcoming fight at the White Pentagon will not go well if my health bar is not full. To get there I need to fight on a moving train and eliminate quite a few enemy groups. It gives me extra opportunities to practice my parry. It has a pretty tight window and is very effective against the more powerful opponents. I don’t have tons money, but I might invest...

Panzer Corps 2: Frontlines - Bulge DLC – Yay or Nay (PC)

26 March 2024 @ 10:01 am

The Panthers were always going to be a problem. After all, they are the pinnacle of World War II German armor, and this version of the Wehrmacht seems to have a lot of them. Even a modernized Sherman with a tank-killer crew has trouble with it. The problem is compounded if the Nazis have also brought StugIII’s or their own anti-tank support. United States infantry, preferably Rangers, and solid artillery fire will stop them dead in their tracks, but it requires plenty of both and space to retreat and reinforce units. The lack of fighter-bombers means I need to keep retreating. The idea is to balance the requirement to hold victory points with the need to preserve the most capable units from one scenario to the next. It’s probably time to decide which wounded infantry squads will stay behind and absorb German Panzer attacks while the rest create a more defensible position. Panzer Corps 2: Frontlines - Bulge is developed by Flashback Games and published by Slitherin...

Alone in the Dark Review (PS5)

26 March 2024 @ 9:49 am

Before there was Resident Evil or Silent Hill, there was Alone in the Dark. The grand pappy of survival horror games had more misses than hits during its career, before it faded away into oblivion. Now it returns from its slumber with a cast of renowned actors like Jodie Comer and David Harbour. But after all these years of pause can this franchise still be relevant? Let’s find out! Since its inception in 1992, Alone in the Dark’s history has been strenuous and although it will always have its place in video game history for creating a new genre, the various iterations were not always a hit. More often than not they failed to reproduce the memorable moments of the first game, and after the low point of the 2015’s co-op focused episode, Atari sold the IP. Now the famous series return, both literally and figuratively. The new game developed by a team led by Mikael Hedberg who signed games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent or SOMA, is a throwback to the origins of the se...

Norland Preview (PC)

25 March 2024 @ 9:26 am

Tsvetanka is busy telling three different lumber mill crews exactly how to conduct their business, making sure that they push for maximum productivity for the next three days. Her sister, Egorka, is doing the same with people working the fields and then, up the production chain, to those working in the grain mill. Meanwhile, the peasants are putting up more dormitories for the incoming migrants, while the third sister, oldest Medena is off on a diplomatic mission. I plan to sell wood, copper, and some beer when the caravan next rolls around to get the gold needed for some new books. Then the entire family will spend a lot of time in the library, unlocking new knowledge and finding ways to then put it to work. We don’t have much of an army, so we need a strong economy to create a surplus, which might be needed to hire some mercenaries. Norland is developed by Long Jaunt and published by Hooded Horse. I played a preview version of the game on Steam. It is set to lau...

Passing By - A Tailwind Journey Review (PC)

25 March 2024 @ 9:17 am

Curly is eating apples and drinking water, presumably bored by this rather restrictive diet. The island she’s on has two trees that she’ll shake to get more fruits and a pump that will refill her bottle. There’s also a fire that warmed her up nicely. All conditions are met for a nice, restful sleep before I take the balloon out again. To get airborne the anchor needs to be up while the burner creates hot air for liftoff. A medium burn rhythm will keep the climb rate relatively stable. It’s now time to go up a long ladder to reach the sail controls and get some extra momentum. The telescope is nearby, the perfect way to take a look around and see if there’s anyone to talk to on nearby floating islands. I also check on my precious orange tree and eat one. The compass is clear that a big island is straight ahead. I soon spot it and then quickly jump down to get to the hold and drop anchor. I jump over the bow onto solid land and start talking with a nice girl who love...

Garden Life: A Cozy Simulator Review (PS5)

21 March 2024 @ 12:10 pm

We can see a surge of “cozy” simulators from Stardew Valley to games depicting various serene themes such as life at grandparents, life at the farm, life at the farm with dinosaurs. This genre is not new at all, but it went through several changes over the years and grew into a genre with several subgenres. Garden Life: A Cozy Simulator focuses on bringing to life a community garden and a relaxed gameplay to help wash away everyday stress. In Garden Life: A Cozy Simulator there is no rush and the maximum action you will see is spraying the nagging bugs invading your precious plants. The entire game is designed intently to help you slow down and detach from your day-to-day struggles refocusing on designing the coziest community gardens you can imagine. This means growing plants, renovating structures, removing boulders and weeds, repainting and replacing fences, finding the perfect spots for both garden gnomes and frog statues, choosing the ideal spot for benches an...

Matchmaker Agency Review (PC)

20 March 2024 @ 4:57 pm

Timothy and Catherine are in the middle of an arcade date, the only location I have unlocked which is almost guaranteed to draw a positive reaction from both of them. It all starts off well, with a nice conversation between the two, a stockbroker and a firefighter. They have both been waiting for a great date for some time and I am determined to deliver it. A kid does his best to annoy the couple, but I suggest they move to another place and that seems to solve the issue. Timothy has to take a call but explains the situation and no one is aggrieved. Catherine leads the pair into a deep conversation that turns out to be interesting. The date ends with a decision to exchange phone numbers and go for another date in the future. Back at my executive desk, I celebrate that two clients found love and move on to business matters. I make two new long-term ad buys, on the radio and in a magazine. Three new clients get on the agency’s list, and I mentally make a note that tw...

Reveil Review (PS5)

19 March 2024 @ 11:03 am

Reveil is a courageous ropewalking act that tries to balance the tropes of a walking simulator with the crucial elements of a horror game. Next to taking you on some leisurely strolls and benign puzzles, the adventure game published by Daedalic will literally make you run for your life and try to build tension in any way possible. Is the end result worth your time or are you better walking different avenues? Of course, the obvious and intentional pun from the intro refers to the fact that Reveil is yet another walking simulator. But the game developed by Pixelsplit manages to stand out as a courageous representee of its genre, that is not afraid to take risks and, though with some obvious limitations, it offers more than just the experience of walking around to take in the game world.     Although the walking simulator term is often considered a derogatory term, there are quite a few memorable interactive stories out there worth experiencing. Among them is now Reve...

Sixty Four Review (PC)

18 March 2024 @ 3:07 pm

How many black cubes are there in the underground of this otherwise empty universe? I’ve been running my initial extractor for more than two hours, augmented by a range of other industrial buildings, and that one’s now pushing out only reds. But the other four digging sites aren’t showing any signs of running out, although the shift toward other colors is on the way. If only resources in the real world were as abundant and easily turned into useful materials. I’ve created a decent layout for my extraction sites, adding ventilation, required pumps, crackers, and entropy machines. I still have to click on some squares but I don’t mind that, mainly because it means I have something to do while resource numbers go up, accumulating before I splurge on another big purchase. While I have a strong economy that mostly keeps up with the constantly rising costs of my industry, the green Hell cubes are too rare for my liking. The normal setup takes too long to get them out and...

Tamarak Trail Review (PC)

15 March 2024 @ 3:32 pm

One of my dice is incomplete, which feels very weird and has already adversely affected one of my battles. I got a wound, which is a very bad thing in a run-based game where taking five of them means death because I rolled a face that had no action attached to it. I know, I should have saved at least one re-roll for such occasions, but I needed them to get past a boss and a nasty pack of insects. Thankfully, I stopped at a campfire and that healed me. The problem is that my detective is now facing a sequence that features exactly five consecutive battles before he gets to a shop and then has to face one of the nasty bosses. It’s highly unlikely I will make it through alive but let’s hope I get some Garmonbozia before I die. My first set of opponents includes three rats, one of which is riding on a mutated cockroach that’s helping it wield a shotgun. I managed to hold my own for quite a few rounds, eliminating two of them. Unfortunately, chance does not favor me, an...
