I also have a ms surface go 2. I would like to connect the two via bt so i can get the gps info to the same opencpn which is on my tab. research led me to a program called virtual port emulator which i followed all directions for and it made the ports but when promted to select the bt device to connect to it would not show my tab even though it is connected, it did show a keyboard and a speaker which is connected. New to this and learning. Any pointers to doing anything in a better way would be great.

Is Windows (Network) Folder Size inaccurate?

19 April 2024 @ 3:35 pm

We have a program that adds columns to various Excel files daily. One way we try to track that it is working is checking the overall folder size and seeing if it increases. The numbers however do not seem to add up. As a test, we start with folder Size 14,873,776,616 and Size on disk 14,876,917,760 bytes. I go to a random Excel file with Size 9,189,791 and Size on disk 9,191,424 bytes. I add 75 rows to it. This changes it to Size 9,192,219 and Size on disk 9,195,520 bytes. But, the folder size remains exactly the same. I'm trying to find some kind of source that folders or network folders don't necessarily have the size completely accurate, but all I have is what I'm seeing in front of me. Is anyone able to shed light on how accurate the folder size is supposed to be?

SSD Keeps Disconnected (Kingston KC3000)

19 April 2024 @ 3:26 pm

I have a Kingston KC3000 2TB SSD. The model number is skc3000d2048g. This drive was fine for 2 years. The Kingston software says the drive is fine. However, quite frequently, the drive starts behaving as if all of the files are missing or corrupt, until the system is rebooted. The drive still appears in File Explorer (as D:), and I can browse the folders and files. However, if I try to open a file from File Explorer, an error dialog appears that says "A device which does not exist was specified." What could be causing this? What can I do to troubleshoot it? enter image description here

I cannot get out of Sleep and Hibernate mode with Uperfect dual monitor

19 April 2024 @ 2:24 pm

I just bought an Uperfect Dual monitor which is great only they don't handle sleep and hibernate mode well. After putting the PC to sleep mode (via the Power button) it works and wakes up pretty well if I wake the computer up within a few minutes. But if I let it on Sleep mode for some time it doesn't wake up and I have to force a full restart. Has anyone encountered the same problem and found a cure? Thank you.

Hardcoding subtitles onto BD rips using a commandline process

19 April 2024 @ 2:09 pm

I have ripped the Digimon Frontier Blu-Ray set and generated 50 MKV files at full quality, titled 401.mkv through 450.mkv. I have downloaded fansub tracks that I have renamed 401.ass through 450.ass. If I just wanted to watch this on my computer, I would be set. However, my goal is to put them on an external drive, which I can plug into my OLED and watch them there. This means that I need to re-encode the subtitle tracks onto the mkv files. I would prefer to do so with minimal quality hit (and something that will use my RTX 3080 for the re-encoding, not just my CPU). Given that I would have to do it 50 times, I would rather just have a command line script. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

kill kde "resume" feature

19 April 2024 @ 2:04 pm

when I have the kind of problem that forces me to reboot, I log back in, and debian+kde helpfully starts up every program it thinks I want to resume. This is, of course, precisely the opposite of why I rebooted - maybe Dolphin is trying to view a folder that's hard to access, which maybe caused the issue. Maybe firefox ran away with ram on some web page. Maybe some hardware driver fails to load hanging the settings app. So the point of rebooting is to start fresh - but on log in, KDE helpfully pulls up all the potentially problematic apps and flings them all in my face, potentially putting the system right back in whatever state made me want to reboot in the first place. Is there some way to turn this off?

‘Just like meaty sausages!’ Europe hosts first cultivated meat tasting

18 April 2024 @ 3:09 pm

Dutch startup Meatable has hosted the first legally approved tasting of cultivated meat in Europe. On the menu was a lab-grown pork sausage. Meatable says the produce is “indistinguishable” from traditional meat, but causes no harm to animals or the environment. To replicate the flavours and textures of livestock, Meatable first extracts a single cell sample from a pig. The sample is then cultivated in a bioreactor. Over time, the sample multiplies and forms real muscle tissue, which is shaped into a familiar meat form. In Europe, however, no one was previously allowed to eat the output. That changed when the…

China still ASML’s biggest market, but falling sales cause drop in profit

Europe’s most valuable tech company saw orders fall to €3.6bn in the first quarter of 2024, down from €9.2bn in the previous quarter. Fallout has already scored a green light for a second season

19 April 2024 @ 10:30 am

Amazon's live adaptation of Fallout was so well-received, the fourth main game in the franchise had a resurgence in sales almost a decade after it was released. If you were ever worried about its fate despite the success it enjoyed, you can rest easy, for now: Amazon has already renewed the show for a second season, mere days after the first one debuted. The Fallout universe is set in a post-apocalyptic world, decades after a nuclear war decimated the planet. Ella Purnell plays Lucy in the series, a vault dweller who was forced to go to the surface to rescue her father. Walton Goggins seems to be a hit with audiences as the Ghoul, a radioactive noseless bounty-hunting corpse. We calle

19 April 2024 @ 9:19 am

The developer behind the popular, award-winning and slightly bawdy Baldur's Gate 3 confirmed that it won't be doing Baldur's Gate 4 — but it does have other irons in the fire.   "We won't be introducing any major new narrative content to the story of Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3) or its origin characters and companions, nor will we be making expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4," Larian Studio wrote in a community update on St

Netflix is done telling us how many people use Netflix

18 April 2024 @ 9:51 pm

Netflix will stop disclosing the number of people who signed up for its service, as well as the revenue it generates from each subscriber from next year, the company announced on Thursday. It will focus, instead, on highlighting revenue growth and the amount of time spent on its platform. “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential,” the company said in a letter to shareholders. “But now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow.” Netflix revealed that the service added 9.33 million subscribers over the last few months, bringing t

Blizzard takes aim at Overwatch 2 console cheaters

18 April 2024 @ 8:39 pm

Like many other multiplayer games, Overwatch 2 isn't immune from cheaters. And it's not only an issue on PC, where cheaters use tools like aimbots. Some folks use XIM devices so they can play with a keyboard and mouse (KBM) on consoles. This is against Blizzard's rules, as KBM players typically have an aim advantage over those who use a controller, even though the console versions of the game have features like aim assist. While it's taken some time to get the ball rolling, the developer is finally doing something about the XIM problem. XIM devices trick consoles into believing that KBM users are playing with a controller. However, in a blog post, Blizzard says it has been able to

It took 20 years for Children of the Sun to become an overnight success

18 April 2024 @ 7:45 pm

Children of the Sun burst onto the indie scene like a muzzle flash on a dark night. Publisher Devolver Digital dropped the game’s first trailer on February 1, showcasing frenzied sniper shots and a radioactive art style. A Steam demo highlighting its initial seven stages went live that same day and became a breakout hit during February’s Steam Next Fest. Two months later it landed in full and to broad acclaim. This explosive reveal and rapid release timeline mirrors the game itself — chaotic but contained, swift and direct, sharp and bright. Though it feels like Children of the Sun popped into existence over the span of two months, it took solo developer René Rother more than 20 years to get here.
