'They want Russia to win so badly': GOP congressman blasts far-right House Republicans

18 April 2024 @ 7:04 pm

A sitting Republican Congressman is harshly criticizing far-right House Republicans over their apparent support of Russia.“I guess their reasoning is they want Russia to win so badly that they want to oust the Speaker over it. I mean that’s a strange position to take,” U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a three-term Texas Republican rated a hard-core conservative told CNN’s Manu Raju, in video posted Thursday. “I think they want to be in the minority too. I think that’s an obvious reality.” Congressman Crenshaw was referring to the movement led by U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), now joined by U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), over the Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s decision to finally put legisla

Yet another House Republican announces retirement — and says 'dysfunction' has 'taken a toll'

18 April 2024 @ 6:54 pm

House Republicans will now have one more vacant seat to fill this November after yet another member of the majority announced his retirement on Thursday.Rep. Jake LaTurner (R-Kansas), who was first elected in 2020, stated he would not be seeking a third term in the House of Representatives this fall. In a statement posted online, LaTurner alluded to the stress of the job itself as well as the current wave of "dysfunction" plaguing the lower chamber of Congress."[T]he busy schedule of serving in and running for Congress has taken a toll," LaTurner said. "The unrepeatable season of life we are in, where our kids are still young and at home, is something I want to be more present for."READ MORE:

'Not particularly intelligent': Gaetz bashes GOP colleague over motion to vacate Johnson

18 April 2024 @ 6:22 pm

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Lousiana) is facing a growing revolt among a faction of far-right Republicans who may soon bring a motion to vacate him to the floor. And the Republican responsible for the ouster of Johnson's predecessor has not yet said which way he is leaning.During a gaggle with reporters on Thursday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) expressed his frustration with Johnson over the issue of sending a new round of funding to Ukraine, which has caused a massive rift among members of the House Republican Conference. Gaetz told CNN congressional reporter Manu Raju that he had a confrontation with Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wisconsin), who reportedly demanded the motion be introduced in a way Gaetz described as "unhinged.""[Van Orden] r

For years U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been called “Pro-Putin.” As far back as 2021, her first year as a member of Congress, the question had been raised on social media: “Is Marjorie Taylor Greene a Russian asset?”In 2022 The Annenberg Public Policy Center’s FactCheck.org reported: “Marjorie Taylor Greene Parrots Russian Talking Point on Ukraine.” Back then, as the article highlighted, Greene had said, “t

'It has to stop': Prosecutors say Trump violated Merchan’s gag order 7 times this week

18 April 2024 @ 5:11 pm

Prosecutors have hit a major snag in the jury selection process in former President Donald Trump's first criminal trial — Trump himself. Already, two jurors empaneled earlier this week were let go. One was dismissed over a prior arrest for tearing down political posters, but another's excusal may have been due to the former president's social media posts. Now, prosecutors are asking Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the trial, to enforce the gag order he previously imposed on Trump, arguing that the ex-president is egregiously violating it with his recent behavior.According to Rolling Stone reporter Nikki McCann Ramirez, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team say Trump has

'Extraordinarily hostile': Trump team weaponizes social media against potential jurors

18 April 2024 @ 4:40 pm

On Thursday morning, April 18, the news broke that one of the jurors who was chosen for Donald Trump's hush money/falsifying business records trial had been dismissed: an oncology nurse who expressed concerns about her ability to be fair and impartial. And there were also major concerns about another juror, who had failed to disclose that in the past, he was arrested for tearing down right-wing political posters. 'Afraid and intimidated': Trump trial juror targeted by Fox News dismissed

18 April 2024 @ 3:33 pm

One of seven jurors selected to serve on the New York criminal trial of Donald Trump has been dismissed after telling the judge she became concerned about her ability to remain impartial. That concern came after too many identifying details about potential jurors this week were reported by the press, leading the judge to admonish the media Thursday morning.“Although the jurors’ names are being kept confidential, the woman, a nurse, ‘conveyed that after sleeping on it overnight she had concerns about her ability to be fair and impartial in this case,’ New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan said before calling her into the room for questioning,” the Associated Press reports.

18 April 2024 @ 3:22 pm

On Thursday, one of the seated jurors in former President Donald Trump's criminal trial was excused amid concerns her identity could be revealed. A former federal prosecutor is suggesting that questions used to screen jurors be fine-tuned in order to better protect their anonymity. The juror — an oncology nurse — told Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing trial proceedings, that she was concerned she could no longer be impartial, and that friends and family had been asking her if she was selected for the jury. Trump is 'generating personal revenue off running for office' and raising 'ethical concerns'

18 April 2024 @ 2:30 pm

Law professor Caroline Fredrickson, in an op-ed published by the New York Times on April 11, laid out her #1 fear about the possibility of a second Donald Trump presidency — which is that if he defeats President Joe Biden in November wins a second term, he will turn the United States' federal government into a "modern-day Tammany Hall." Trump, Fredrickson warned, will merge government and business to a troubling degree if he returns to the White House in 2025.In USA Today, journalists Zac Anderson and Erin Mansfield repo

Tom Cotton wants to 'mobilize vigilantes' against protesters: analysis

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has drawn a great deal of criticism for an April 15 tweet in which he promoted violence against protesters who are opposed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military policies in Gaza. On X, formerly Twitter, the GOP senator posted, "I encourage people who get stuck behind the pro-Hamas mobs blocking traffic: take matters into your own hands. It's time to put an end to this nonsense." A funeral home copes with the surge during the coronavirus pandemic

5 May 2020 @ 7:54 pm

During normal times, Joe Ruggiero Jr. might hold 25 funerals a month; this April there have been 71. Due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, his family’s funeral home in East Boston is so overrun that the tribute lounge and cafe normally used to display portraits of the departed has been turned into a makeshift storage space. A thin white sheet of plastic held together with binder clips is all that separates the hallway from the caskets. The white board in the office downstairs is overflowing with funerals. Three on Wednesday. Four on Thursday. Five on Friday. Joe Jr., his son, Joe III, and his daughter, Catie, work tirelessly to make sure that everything is as perfect as it can be in order to bring some comfort to families in grief. Patrick Lupien and Mariah LeMieux-Lupien knew they were going to be evicted from their apartment in Biddeford, Maine. The lapse was a matter of basic math: As Mariah put it, when you don’t have it, you don’t have it. Despite Patrick’s $40,000 a year salary, the Lupien family became part of an often invisible group known as the “working homeless.” Their story illustrates the growing housing inequality that is prevalent in America today. The family’s hard road over the next six months - from eviction, to living in a campground, to homeless shelters, and then finally finding a home - offers a window into the insecurity and panic that comes with raising children on the brink of financial insolvency.
