Best cut flower varieties for a sustainable home garden

14 August 2023 @ 4:30 pm

Cut flowers sounded easy when I started gardening. Just plant some flowers and then cut them, right? Well, there is a lot more to it than that. Cut flowers are often grown from specific varieties that tend to have long, sturdy stems and big, beautiful blooms, and each variety has its own tips to keep them healthy. It also can be hard to find the right varieties in sustainable versions. [...]

Travel to the ancient beauty of Machu Picchu, Peru

11 August 2023 @ 3:30 pm

Our group sat in a circle at a 15th century Inca site. We each held three coca leaves glued together with llama fat and concentrated on protection, prosperity and a balanced life. A young shaman named Lucas alternately prayed in Quechua and explained things to us in Spanish, both translated by our guide Wilfredo Huillca. The shaman added quinoa, corn, confetti and other symbolic items to Pachamama, the Andean earth mother. Fortunately, modern rituals substitute animal cookies for alpaca sacrifices.[...]

10 August 2023 @ 4:30 pm

Humans living in harmony with nature and with each other is really the goal of sustainable, environmentally-friendly design. And it is hardly a hip and modern idea, not unless you think the Stone Age is trendy. Long ago, people banded together in groups to live and work together as one community, rather than as individuals. Now, Castlepoint Numa is bringing this ancient idea into the modern era with an innovative design.[...]

Moto Distracto: Steady Garage customizes the new Honda Motocompacto

3 May 2024 @ 7:34 pm

Custom Honda Motocompacto by Steady Garage If it’s small and it comes from Honda, you can bet your bottom Dollar Steady Garage will be all over it. The Californian outfit is best known for their wild Honda Ruckus and Grom customs, and stocks a staggering number of scooter and mini-moto parts. So it’s hardly surprising that the first custom Honda Motocompacto we’ve seen comes from the Steady crew. Recently released by Honda, the Motocompacto is an all-electric reissue of the adorable, legendary, and ultimately short-lived, Honda Motocompo. Produced between 1981 and 1983 and only sold in Japan, the Motocompo was a 50 cc moped that could fold up to

This five-cylinder Puch proves there’s no replacement for displacement

2 May 2024 @ 9:45 pm

Custom five-cylinder Puch Maxi S moped They say that there’s no replacement for displacement. By that logic, the best way to improve a single-cylinder Puch moped is to turn it into a five-cylinder Puch moped. At least, that’s Uwe Oltmanns’ theory. Based in Northern Germany, Uwe is a moped enthusiast with an extensive resume. He’s a professional toolmaker who’s worked at Airbus, built hopped-up Opel street cars, and dabbled in drag racers. These days, he spends his time building vintage car engines from parts that he’s machined himself—mostly for pre-war BMW 328s.

Review: Riding the stunning Yamaha XSR900 GP retro sportbike

29 April 2024 @ 10:15 pm

Yamaha XSR900 GP review Some motorcycles beg to be ridden in anger. Others drip with nostalgia. If you draw a Venn diagram of those two paradigms, you’ll find the Yamaha XSR900 GP smack dab in the middle of the intersection. The Yamaha XSR900 GP just about melted our servers (and lit up our comments section) when it first broke cover in October of last year. Drawing inspiration from Yamaha’s illustrious racing heritage, it’s a homage to iconic bikes like the Yamaha TZR250 and YZR500 OW01, reimagined on the modern, three-cylinder XSR900 platform. And its retro sportbike underpinnings make it one of the most striking factory bikes currently on the

Bob Jobs: The Bike EXIF guide to bobber motorcycles in 2024

27 April 2024 @ 11:57 am

The best OEM bobber motorcycles of 2024 Strip it back to the bare essentials, and make it lighter, faster and cooler. It’s a recipe for success that dates back nearly as far as the motorcycle itself, and it’s no surprise that bobber motorcycles are one of the longest-standing forms of custom bikes. Accepted theories date the inception of the bobber back as far as the late 1920s and early 30s, when riders started stripping off standard road equipment to shed weight and stand out from the crowd. Emulating competition bikes of the day (predominantly AMA dirt track), road riders commonly stripped front fenders, exhaust silencers and other add-ons, and rear fenders were shortened drastically. In f

The DAB 1a: A limited edition boutique electric motorcycle from France

24 April 2024 @ 10:32 am

DAB 1α electric motorcycle The rise of DAB Motors has been nothing short of meteoric. Simon Dabadie founded the boutique French motorcycle manufacturer in 2018, released the first Euro-compliant, made-to-order custom bike in 2019, and then pivoted to electric motorcycles in 2021 with a brutally minimalist prototype. Now, just three years on, that prototype is going into production as the limited edition DAB 1α. The move comes a year after DAB’s acquisition by Peugeot Motocycles. Bringing DAB’s electric bike to market was a major fo

OÍR / February 2024 — The Fox Is Black Mixtape

1 February 2024 @ 3:21 pm

OÍR / February 2024 — The Fox Is Black Mixtape Download the Mixtape → Love is a lot of things. Intoxicating, messy, nourishing, consuming, fleeting. And just like love, this mix is a lot things, and it really shouldn’t work, but I think it does. I set out to create a mixtape that contained a multitude of perspectives on love, coming at it from a number of different angles. It really started off with Crystal Castles classic "Not In Love" as Robert Smith's vocals are incredible on it, and the way it builds at the end always gave me chills. From there I kept thinking of the Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman" as well as Grace Jones, so then figuring out how I m

Eagle Rock’s Dunsmoor Restaurant by Lovers Unite

31 January 2024 @ 5:00 pm

If there's one thing I miss about living in Los Angeles it's the caliber of amazing restaurants that continue to flourish there. A great example is Dunsmoor, the creation of chef Brian Dunsmoor, an Eagle Rock restaurant and wine bar that opened in late June 2022. But the space was really shaped by the creative genius of Lovers Unite, aka Karen Spector and Alan Koch. Lovers Unite describe their practice as an architecture and design studio creating one-of-a-kind homes and hospitality spaces. The work they've done for Dunsmoor is a balancing act between preserving and augmenting the gorgeous 1929 Spanish Revival building, really letting the space shine. I mean, look at those windows! It's a place where you want to sit languidly in the sun on a lazy Sunday with friends.

SOPHIE Boiler Room Mix – August 2014

31 January 2024 @ 3:00 pm

It's now been three years since SOPHIE tragically passed away, and as a great way to remember her legacy is listen to this set she did back in 2014 in Los Angeles. It's literally perfection, and you can still hear the impact she made on music today.

Rich, Colorful Photography by David Gomez-Maestre

31 January 2024 @ 1:00 pm

Paris-based photographer David Gomez-Maestre caught my eye thanks to his gorgeous, richly colored photos. Growing up in Alicante, Spain, he is inspired by the light of his hometown, Spanish folklore, and his childhood memories. His sense of color is next-level, often utilizing a palette that's reminiscent of the 60s and 70s. Think lots of deep reds, burnt oranges, limes, and brash turquoise tones. Gorgeous work. A Genre-Defying Essential Mix from DJ Python

24 January 2024 @ 8:11 pm

I love me a mix, especially when an artist truly does something unique and totally out-of-the-box. Enter DJ Python, who's musical style has been described as "futuristic reggaeton" who comes out of nowhere with the most eclectic mix of 2024, and maybe, ever?! The range of this mix is unheard of. He describes it as "60-plus edited songs and unreleased stuff from friends and myself" but this literally spans nearly ever genre you can imagine. I can't stop listening to this, and the ending, my god, it's maybe one of the most magical things I've ever heard. I hope you enjoy it!

Liam Lee Tufts Together Fantastic Seating and Tapestries

22 January 2024 @ 1:34 pm

What if you could sit in a fungi of microscopic proportions? Liam Lee makes dreams comes true, a New York artist is a furniture and textile designer who works in felted wool, crafting fantastical objects that look like the things you see in 70s science books. Vibrantly colored, oddly shaped, and beautiful to admire, his chairs and tapestries are wondrous objects. In an interview with Curbed, he loves the idea of his work being both desirable and repulsive. “I like that some people might be disgusted because you’re in this weird space where an object is either considered really beautiful or just this gross, unapproachable thing,” he says. “I want the viewer to approach it without any preconceived notions of what it is supposed to be.”

27 Most Beautiful New Restaurants in America in 2023

18 January 2024 @ 12:00 pm

Kim Gordon Releases “BYE BYE” in Anticipation of New Album, ‘The Collective’

17 January 2024 @ 3:00 pm

I think Kim Gordon is one of the coolest people alive. If you're unfamiliar, she is well-known for being part of iconic rock band Sonic Youth, and since then, has gone on to be a writer, a painter, fashion designer, model, etc. 40 years alter and she's still making some of the hardest music out there. Her previous record No Home Record sounded like an amalgamation of electronic, hip-hop, and rock, creating a noisy mashup that is both hard to listen to and totally entrancing. Yesterday she announced her new record, The Collective, along with a music video for the song "BYE BYE." The video stars her daughter Coco Gordon Moore as a mysterious teen on the run from unknown forces. The track continues Gordon's electronic noise rock sound, messy and glitchy and great. Excited to see what she's cooked up on 8 March.
