The Burden: A Darkly Funny Musical Punctures Existential Dread with Unusually Cheerful Song and Dance

27 April 2024 @ 11:50 am

Today we’re returning to a dark comedy classic that, although released in 2017, rings just as true in 2024. Directed by Swedish animator Niki Lindroth von Bahr, “The Burden” is a wildly wry musical that skewers loneliness, greed, beauty myths, and the existential woes of modern life through a lively cast of animal characters. The award-winning short film visits a bleak supermarket, hotel, call center, and fast-food restaurant where employees break into song and dance, sometimes to the tune of common sales refrains. Two Decades After Its Release, ‘The Art Book for Children’ Gets a Vibrant Makeover

26 April 2024 @ 5:15 pm

First published in 1997, Phaidon’s The Art Book has long been a go-to source for introductions to some of the most influential artists. Spanning medieval to modern times, the volume contains more than 600 works and is available in 20 languages. About two decades ago, the iconic title received another type of translation geared specifically toward younger art lovers when editors released The Art Book for Children. That kids’ edition presents a bite-sized, accessible version of The Art Book and was recently updated and revised. More Do stories and artists like this matter to you? Jason Limon Gets to the Heart of Human Emotion in His Soul-Stirring Skeleton Paintings

26 April 2024 @ 3:08 pm

Reaching toward universal experiences unclouded by specific identities, Jason Limon strips his recurring characters to the bare bones. The San Antonio-based artist (previously) continues his uncanny paintings of skeletons, who find themselves in precarious, startling, and genial situations. Recent works include “Peas In A Pod,” which features two friends adopting new heads from a large, curved shell. Similar smiling orbs appear in “The Right Grape” as a character chooses and fits the cheerful green fruit onto its neck. More Do stories and artists like this matter to you? Stéphane Thidet Challenges Physics and Social Norms in His Site-Specific Installations

26 April 2024 @ 1:13 pm

Paris-based artist Stéphane Thidet invites viewers into wondrous worlds that skew perceptions and distort the laws of physics: a small wooden boat appears to arise from hard planks, flat stones nest inside a bookcase where paper tomes once stood, and water cascades from a Nantes theater making it impossible to enter without being drenched. Crafted with familiar materials and subject matter, Thidet’s site-specific installations and sculptures twist common scenes into unexpected territories. In His World-Building Series ‘New Prophets,’ Jorge Mañes Rubio Cloaks Basketballs in Beads

25 April 2024 @ 5:20 pm

Beginning with an iconic yet common spherical form, Jorge Mañes Rubio reimagines basketballs as powerful entities in his series New Prophets. Ornamented with stylized creatures, botanicals, and figures, each sculpture tells its own enigmatic story, drawing on the inextricable link between past and present. “These works, although familiar in visual language, seem to come from a dream-like dimension,” the artist tells Colossal, “as if offering a chance at re-enchanting the world we live in.” New Prophets began with a fascination with an 8th-century Spanish illuminated manuscript called the Commentary on the Apocalypse that’s decorated in a Mozarabic style,

Informed by Research Aboard Ships, Elsa Guillaume Translates the Wonder of Marine Adventures

25 April 2024 @ 3:30 pm

Whether capturing the sights of a dive in the remote Mexican village of Xcalak or the internal mechanisms of a sailing ship, Elsa Guillaume’s stylized sketchbooks record her adventures. Glimpses of masts, a kitchen quaking from shaky seas, and a hand gutting a fish create a rich tapestry of life on the move. “Daily drawings (are) a ritual while traveling,” she tells Colossal. “It is a way to practice the gaze, to be attentive to any type of surroundings. Ronald Jackson’s Masked Portraits of Imaginary Characters Stoke Curiosity About Their Stories

25 April 2024 @ 1:47 pm

Six years ago, Ronald Jackson had only four months to prepare for a solo exhibition. The short time frame led to a series of large-scale portraits that focused on an imagined central figure, often peering directly back at the viewer, in front of vibrant backgrounds. But he quickly grew uninspired by painting the straightforward head-and-shoulder compositions. “Portraits, which are usually based in concepts of identity, can present a challenge for artists desiring to suggest narratives,” he tells Colossal. Just Add Water: Grow Your Own Furniture with These Pop-Up Sponge Designs

24 April 2024 @ 8:43 pm

A team of industrial designers prototyped a furniture collection that dramatically transforms from flat sheets into fully functional objects, no tools required. Taking Gaetano Pesce’s spectacular “Up 5” chair as a starting point, Under Pressure Solutions (UPS) is an experimental research project helmed by industrial designers and ÉCAL teachers Camille Blin, Christophe Guberan, Anthony Guex, Chris Kabel, and Julie Richoz. The team recognized the rampant demand for online commerce and subsequent shipping processes that, for furniture, was often cumbersome, expensive, and wasteful given the size and bulk of the products. Tune into Your Own Brain Waves with Steve Parker’s Suspended Constellations of Salvaged Brass

24 April 2024 @ 2:45 pm

Many therapists advise patients to reconnect with their inner voice, a part of treatment that, as anyone who’s tried it can attest, is easier said than done. But what if you could tune into to your internal ups and downs in the same way you listen to a song? In his Sonic Meditation for Solo Performer series, Austin-based artist and musician Steve Parker fashions immersive installations of salvaged brass. Suspended in clusters with their bells pointing every direction, the instruments envelop a single viewer, who wears an EEG brain monitor and silently reads a series of meditations. Imagining Worlds After Climate Disaster, Julie Heffernan Melds Chaos and the Sublime

23 April 2024 @ 9:14 pm

Julie Heffernan likens her paintings to “advent calendars gone haywire.” Working in oil on canvas, the Brooklyn-based artist renders vast dreamworlds with tiny vignettes scattered across wider landscapes. Appearing from a distant or aerial perspective, the pieces envision the possibilities of life after fires, floods, and other climate disasters and potential opportunities for emerging anew. Grand in scale and scope, the intricate paintings bear titles like “Self Portrait as Emergency Shipwright” and “Self Portrait with Sanctuary,” which nod to the personal details within each work. From the urban tapestry of Los Angeles to a sustainable city

The city's architectural landscape reflects a rich tapestry woven with threads of history, culture, and innovation. Best cut flower varieties for a sustainable home garden

14 August 2023 @ 4:30 pm

Cut flowers sounded easy when I started gardening. Just plant some flowers and then cut them, right? Well, there is a lot more to it than that. It also can be hard to find the right varieties in sustainable versions. [...]

Bob Jobs: The Bike EXIF guide to bobber motorcycles in 2024

27 April 2024 @ 11:57 am

The best OEM bobber motorcycles of 2024 Strip it back to the bare essentials, and make it lighter, faster and cooler. It’s a recipe for success that dates back nearly as far as the motorcycle itself, and it’s no surprise that bobber motorcycles are one of the longest-standing forms of custom bikes. Accepted theories date the inception of the bobber back as far as the late 1920s and early 30s, when riders started stripping off standard road equipment to shed weight and stand out from the crowd. Emulating competition bikes of the day (predominantly AMA dirt track), road riders commonly stripped front fenders, exhaust silencers and other add-ons, and rear fenders were shortened drastically. K-Speed strikes again with a menacing Honda Dax café racer

19 April 2024 @ 4:11 pm

Honda Dax café racer by K-Speed When the Honda Dax was brought back into production a couple of years ago, K-Speed wasted little time getting their grubby paws on it. The Thai powerhouse’s founder, the mysterious Mr Eak, had a 50 cc Dax as a teenager—and the workshop is particularly good at customizing small Hondas. So a K-Speed-customized Dax was inevitable. Two years on, and K-Speed is still finding interesting ways to cram massive levels of badassery into Honda’s bite-sized mini-bike. This time, they’ve turned the Dax into an uber-sassy—albeit impossibly compact—

But we wouldn’t have the first clue on how to customize a modern Vespa. They’re cute enough as they are, begging to be lightly accessorized rather than heavily modified. Four-cylinder Fury: A Honda Hornet café racer from France

Honda Hornet café racer by Seb Kustom Motorcycle On paper, the late-2000s Honda CB600F Hornet is a great bike; a lively four-cylinder middleweight, widely praised for its rideability and reliability. But in the flesh, it’s hard to get excited about. Like most of Honda’s naked bikes, the steadfast Hornet lacks panache—which makes it prime material for customization. This Honda Hornet café racer comes from Sébastien Vernaison in France—a part-time custom builder that works as Seb Kustom Motorcycle. He bought the bike a few years ago, customized it, and then decided to put it back under the knife to add even more swagger. And we’re glad he did,

And just like love, this mix is a lot things, and it really shouldn’t work, but I think it does. I set out to create a mixtape that contained a multitude of perspectives on love, coming at it from a number of different angles. It really started off with Crystal Castles classic "Not In Love" as Robert Smith's vocals are incredible on it, and the way it builds at the end always gave me chills. From there I kept thinking of the Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman" as well as Grace Jones, so then figuring out how I m

Eagle Rock’s Dunsmoor Restaurant by Lovers Unite

31 January 2024 @ 5:00 pm

If there's one thing I miss about living in Los Angeles it's the caliber of amazing restaurants that continue to flourish there. A great example is Dunsmoor, the creation of chef Brian Dunsmoor, an Eagle Rock restaurant and wine bar that opened in late June 2022. But the space was really shaped by the creative genius of Lovers Unite, aka Karen Spector and Alan Koch. Lovers Unite describe their practice as an architecture and design studio creating one-of-a-kind homes and hospitality spaces. The work they've done for Dunsmoor is a balancing act between preserving and augmenting the gorgeous 1929 Spanish Revival building, really letting the space shine. I mean, look at those windows! It's a place where you want to sit languidly in the sun on a lazy Sunday with friends.

Enter DJ Python, who's musical style has been described as "futuristic reggaeton" who comes out of nowhere with the most eclectic mix of 2024, and maybe, ever?! The range of this mix is unheard of. He describes it as "60-plus edited songs and unreleased stuff from friends and myself" but this literally spans nearly ever genre you can imagine. I can't stop listening to this, and the ending, my god, it's maybe one of the most magical things I've ever heard. I hope you enjoy it!

Kim Gordon Releases “BYE BYE” in Anticipation of New Album, ‘The Collective’

17 January 2024 @ 3:00 pm

I think Kim Gordon is one of the coolest people alive. If you're unfamiliar, she is well-known for being part of iconic rock band Sonic Youth, and since then, has gone on to be a writer, a painter, fashion designer, model, etc. 40 years alter and she's still making some of the hardest music out there. Her previous record No Home Record sounded like an amalgamation of electronic, hip-hop, and rock, creating a noisy mashup that is both hard to listen to and totally entrancing. Yesterday she announced her new record, The Collective, along with a music video for the song "BYE BYE." The video stars her daughter Coco Gordon Moore as a mysterious teen on the run from unknown forces. The track continues Gordon's electronic noise rock sound, messy and glitchy and great. Excited to see what she's cooked up on 8 March.

Study shows ‘benevolent sexism’ in startups widens the gender gap

26 April 2024 @ 6:00 pm

Our understanding of the challenges women face in the startup ecosystem is limited. Past research has focused on overt negative sexist attitudes that question women’s competence and suitability for entrepreneurship. This view overlooks the existence of more subtle, yet pervasive and socially acceptable, sexist attitudes that often go unnoticed. Given the sheer number of people interested or working in startups today, from investors to suppliers to job applicants, the effects of these subtle forms of sexism can accumulate across a large and diverse group of decision-makers. For initiatives tackling gender inequality in entrepreneurship to be effective, we must gain a…

Why Lithuania is a hidden gem of Europe’s startup ecosystem

26 April 2024 @ 4:14 pm

In 2022, over 20,000 Lithuanians returned to their country of birth from abroad. A high quality of life coupled with a booming entrepreneurial ecosystem and a collaborative mentality has contributed to what investors are calling a “reverse brain drain.” Many of their minds reemerge in the country’s startup scene. It was on a visit to Lisbon that I first heard someone refer to Lithuania as “a hidden gem” of Europe’s startup ecosystem. A recent trip to Vilnius convinced me they were right. To further drive the inspiring transformation it has achieved since regaining its independence from the Soviet Union in…

Dubbed DeepL Write Pro, the product acts as a creative assistant for use during the drafting process. It provides suggestions on word choice, phrasing, style, and tone, aiming to improve the text, while preserving the writer’s own voice. Its use scope covers multiple types of business communication,…

Darktrace agrees £4.3B sale to US investor in blow to UK stock market

26 April 2024 @ 10:16 am

British cybersecurity flag bearer Darktrace is set to leave London’s stock market after agreeing a £4.3bn sale to US private equity firm Thoma Bravo. Shareholders will have to approve the takeover before it’s rubber-stamped. The chair of Darktrace, Gordon Hurst, said the deal represents “an attractive premium and an opportunity for shareholders.” “The proposed acquisition will provide Darktrace access to a strong financial partner in Thoma Bravo, with deep software sector expertise, who can enhance the company’s position as a best-in-class cyber AI business headquartered in the UK,” he added. The deal would end a turbulent spell on the London’s…

To understand the risks posed by AI, follow the money

26 April 2024 @ 6:51 am

Time and again, leading scientists, technologists, and philosophers have made spectacularly terrible guesses about the direction of innovation. Even Einstein was not immune, claiming, “There is not the slightest indication that nuclear energy will ever be obtainable,” just ten years before Enrico Fermi completed construction of the first fission reactor in Chicago. Shortly thereafter, the consensus switched to fears of an imminent nuclear holocaust. Similarly, today’s experts warn that an artificial general intelligence (AGI) doomsday is imminent. Others retort that large language models (LLMs) have already reached the peak of their powers. It’s difficult to argue with David Collingridge’s influential…

Cyberattacks on Poland surged after election of pro-Ukraine government, NetScout says

25 April 2024 @ 5:51 pm

Cyber attackers battered Poland after the country’s change of government late last year. DDoS attacks at the end of 2023 were nearly quadruple the country’s average, according to cybersecurity firm NetScout’s observations. The surge began when the Law and Justice party (PiS) lost its majority in last year’s Polish general election. PiS had ruled the country since 2015. It was replaced by a coalition government, which reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s defence against Russia’s invasion. NetScout described these developments as “a perfect storm” for adversaries. Several hacktivist gangs promptly responded with a barrage of cyberattacks. The most notable group was NoName057, which…

Europe taps deep learning to make industrial robots safer colleagues

25 April 2024 @ 1:05 pm

Demand for industrial robots is rising in Europe, especially driven by the benefits of automation. However, there are ongoing challenges in ensuring seamless collaboration with humans while maintaining safety. To address this issue, a consortium of European universities, technology accelerators, and private research labs is launching the RoboSAPIENs project. The aim is to build the necessary safety mechanisms with a particular focus on adaptive industrial robots — a category of autonomous robots that can learn new behaviours without being reprogrammed and adapt to changes in their system structure or environment. One eye-catching ambition targets a big problem for adaptive robots:…

AI unicorn Synthesia launches most ’emotionally expressive’ avatars on the market

25 April 2024 @ 11:23 am

A British startup today unveiled new AI humans that blur the line between the virtual and the real. Synthesia calls the digital beings “Expressive Avatars.” They promise the most realistic emotional expressions on the market.  Generated by an AI model that’s trained on footage of real actors, the avatars are built for video creation. Users simply enter a text prompt and the synthetic humans read them out on a screen. The photorealistic renders are certainly impressive. But what makes them unique is their capacity to convey human feelings. Using a technique called “automatic sentiment prediction,” Synthesia’s AI models infer the…

‘Airbnb for cars’ platform SnappCar changes hands in bid for further growth

24 April 2024 @ 2:01 pm

Dutch car-sharing platform SnappCar, which claims to be the largest of its kind in the Netherlands, has been fully acquired by AutoBinck Group — a shareholder in the scaleup since its founding in 2011. The ownership change also sees the return of SnappCar’s founder, Victor van Tol, in the role of the CEO. Van Told told local newspaper mt/sprout that the acquisition will enable faster decisions and eliminate the need for external investments. AutoBinck, which specialises in mobility and energy solutions, has a turnover of approximately €1bn. According to the two companies, the deal aims to support SnappCar’s further growth.…
