The End Of The Free Tier

And while the distinction may be nuanced, the consequences of sunsetting free-tier pricing may be huge.

1 February 2024 @ 3:21 pm

OÍR / February 2024 — The Fox Is Black Mixtape Download the Mixtape → Love is a lot of things. Intoxicating, messy, nourishing, consuming, fleeting. And just like love, this mix is a lot things, and it really shouldn’t work, but I think it does. I set out to create a mixtape that contained a multitude of perspectives on love, coming at it from a number of different angles. It really started off with Crystal Castles classic "Not In Love" as Robert Smith's vocals are incredible on it, and the way it builds at the end always gave me chills. From there I kept thinking of the Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman" as well as Grace Jones, so then figuring out how I m

Eagle Rock’s Dunsmoor Restaurant by Lovers Unite

31 January 2024 @ 5:00 pm

If there's one thing I miss about living in Los Angeles it's the caliber of amazing restaurants that continue to flourish there. A great example is Dunsmoor, the creation of chef Brian Dunsmoor, an Eagle Rock restaurant and wine bar that opened in late June 2022. But the space was really shaped by the creative genius of Lovers Unite, aka Karen Spector and Alan Koch. Lovers Unite describe their practice as an architecture and design studio creating one-of-a-kind homes and hospitality spaces. The work they've done for Dunsmoor is a balancing act between preserving and augmenting the gorgeous 1929 Spanish Revival building, really letting the space shine. I mean, look at those windows! It's a place where you want to sit languidly in the sun on a lazy Sunday with friends.

Rich, Colorful Photography by David Gomez-Maestre

31 January 2024 @ 1:00 pm

Paris-based photographer David Gomez-Maestre caught my eye thanks to his gorgeous, richly colored photos. Growing up in Alicante, Spain, he is inspired by the light of his hometown, Spanish folklore, and his childhood memories. His sense of color is next-level, often utilizing a palette that's reminiscent of the 60s and 70s. Think lots of deep reds, burnt oranges, limes, and brash turquoise tones. Gorgeous work. A Genre-Defying Essential Mix from DJ Python

24 January 2024 @ 8:11 pm

I love me a mix, especially when an artist truly does something unique and totally out-of-the-box. Enter DJ Python, who's musical style has been described as "futuristic reggaeton" who comes out of nowhere with the most eclectic mix of 2024, and maybe, ever?! The range of this mix is unheard of. He describes it as "60-plus edited songs and unreleased stuff from friends and myself" but this literally spans nearly ever genre you can imagine. I can't stop listening to this, and the ending, my god, it's maybe one of the most magical things I've ever heard. I hope you enjoy it!

Liam Lee Tufts Together Fantastic Seating and Tapestries

22 January 2024 @ 1:34 pm

What if you could sit in a fungi of microscopic proportions? Liam Lee makes dreams comes true, a New York artist is a furniture and textile designer who works in felted wool, crafting fantastical objects that look like the things you see in 70s science books. Vibrantly colored, oddly shaped, and beautiful to admire, his chairs and tapestries are wondrous objects. In an interview with Curbed, he loves the idea of his work being both desirable and repulsive. “I like that some people might be disgusted because you’re in this weird space where an object is either considered really beautiful or just this gross, unapproachable thing,” he says. “I want the viewer to approach it without any preconceived notions of what it is supposed to be.”

Kim Gordon Releases “BYE BYE” in Anticipation of New Album, ‘The Collective’

17 January 2024 @ 3:00 pm

I think Kim Gordon is one of the coolest people alive. If you're unfamiliar, she is well-known for being part of iconic rock band Sonic Youth, and since then, has gone on to be a writer, a painter, fashion designer, model, etc. 40 years alter and she's still making some of the hardest music out there. Her previous record No Home Record sounded like an amalgamation of electronic, hip-hop, and rock, creating a noisy mashup that is both hard to listen to and totally entrancing. Yesterday she announced her new record, The Collective, along with a music video for the song "BYE BYE." The video stars her daughter Coco Gordon Moore as a mysterious teen on the run from unknown forces. The track continues Gordon's electronic noise rock sound, messy and glitchy and great. Excited to see what she's cooked up on 8 March.

Uber rival Bolt secures €220M in prep for IPO

3 May 2024 @ 2:38 pm

Estonian mobility startup Bolt has secured a €220mn credit facility as it plans to go public next year.   This type of financing is a more flexible loan option, which allows a business to withdraw and repay funds as needed, on an ongoing basis. Kind of like a credit card for companies.  The credit facility provides Bolt “with additional flexibility as we work towards being IPO-ready,” CEO and founder Markus Villig said in a statement. Lenders include Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan. The money supplements Bolt’s “strong cash position” and “strengthens its liquidity profile,” the company said. Alongside…

Deeptech VC raises €300M in push for ‘semiconductor supremacy’

3 May 2024 @ 10:50 am

Flemish venture capital firm Imec.xpand has raised €300mn to invest in deeptech startups.    The VC is a spinoff from Leuven-based Imec, one of the world’s largest microelectronics research institutions.  The new fund targets  AI, semiconductors, nanotechnology, photonics, and quantum computing. It will also invest in startups working on new ways to diagnose and treat medical conditions.    To date, Imec.xpand has invested in 23 companies that have so far raised a combined €1.5bn in funding. This includes two unicorns — companies valued at €1bn or more. Imec.xpand recently opened a new office in the Netherlands, according to Dutch newspaper Het Financieele…

AI-powered ‘deep medicine’ could transform healthcare in the NHS

2 May 2024 @ 6:00 pm

Today’s NHS faces severe time constraints, with the risk of short consultations and concerns about the risk of misdiagnosis or delayed care. These challenges are compounded by limited resources and overstretched staff that results in protracted patient wait times and generic treatment strategies. Staff can operate with a surface level view of patient data, relying on basic medical histories and recent test results. This lack of comprehensive data interferes with their ability to fully understand patient needs and compromises the accuracy and individualisation of diagnoses and treatments. Such a healthcare approach, characterised by these limitations and engagements, could aptly be…

Europe is falling behind in the race to develop space-based solar power

2 May 2024 @ 1:03 pm

When the EU approved the European Green Deal in 2020, the bloc unveiled a plan to lead the clean energy transition. Yet it has since faced growing competition from both China — which has quickly and quietly buried Europe’s solar panel industry and is now taking aim at its EV market — and the US, which under the Biden administration took an about-face on sustainability with the introduction of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. As the EU invests more into renewables, it will need to overcome hurdles around reliability, storage, transmission, and scalability to reach its ambitious 2030 renewable…

This tech investor will pay Ukrainian farmers to trap carbon in their soil

2 May 2024 @ 9:55 am

Lithuanian climate investment firm HeavyFinance has added over 700,000 football pitches-worth of farmland in Ukraine to its soil carbon credit programme. Modern agriculture has taken its toll on soils. Centuries of plowing, cutting, and overgrazing has made land less fertile. This has also released billions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.   HeavyFinance pays farmers to put some of this carbon back into the ground.  Specifically, the company issues loans to encourage the switch to regenerative farming practices. This includes rotating crops, growing cover crops during the off season, or plowing less often. These processes can remove carbon from the…

As Kubernetes turns 10, experts predict the future of cloud-native

2 May 2024 @ 8:05 am

In June, Kubernetes celebrates its tenth birthday. The system is now so widely used by hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide to scale their applications to meet demand it’s hard even to remember a time before it existed. But there was a time when other options were available, and I even remember using some of them.  Despite this relative vintage, many large developers teams and companies are still yet to embark on a migration to Kubernetes, or are in the middle of the process. But to many developers who like to live on the edge, 10 years of a technology…This story continues

Dutch minister fears ‘national security risk’ from Chinese ownership of Anteryon

1 May 2024 @ 5:19 pm

Another Dutch tech firm has been caught in the simmering tensions between the West and China. Amid growing calls to curb Chinese access to chipmaking equipment from ASML, a Dutch minister has raised a separate alarm about the sale of Philips spinoff Anteryon. Although the digital-optics developer remains based in Eindhoven, the business was bought in 2019 by China’s Jingfang Optotelectronics. The Suzhou-based firm reportedly spent between €40mn and €50mn on the acquisition. Following a separate buyout in 2021, the chip company China Wafer became Jinfang’s majority shareholder. These deals attracted the concerns of Micky Adriaansens, the outgoing Dutch Economy…

Dutch startup to bring robotic blood drawing to hospitals

1 May 2024 @ 3:48 pm

Utrecht-based Vitestro has raised €20mn to bring its robotic blood drawing device to market. Founded in 2017, Vitestro aims to improve the blood draw experience for patients and address personnel shortages in healthcare — where the demand for skilled laboratory professionals is growing at a higher rate than any other occupation. The startup’s device relies on infrared to locate the vein and ultrasound to create an image of the blood vessel. Then, an AI-based robotic needle uses this information to determine the right puncture location with submillimetre precision. Since 2023, Vitestro is running the world’s largest-scale clinical trial for autonomous…

New AI technique detects money laundering via cryptocurrencies

1 May 2024 @ 3:07 pm

Blockchain is often criticised as a solution in search of a problem. But one group of people has already found immense value in the tech: money launderers. Their crimes cause painful headaches for financial institutions, crypto businesses, legitimate law enforcement agencies, and cryptocurrency regulators. All of them need to tackle illicit activity on blockchains. Enter Elliptic, a British firm that specialises in cryptocurrency forensics. The company uses blockchain analytics to protect customers from financial crimes. Its latest safeguard taps the power of AI.
