Kozo Yokoi

9 September 2022 @ 6:08 pm

(Find me at 50 Watts Books.) Here's a real find (for me at least): an illustration from a 1925 issue of Kodomonotomo. I had never seen work by this person (I think I'd remember!): Kozo Yokoi (1889–1965), who went on to a career as a painter (dubbed "the Japanese Rousseau"). I scanned these from a 2017 book on Kodomonotomo. I'll see what else I can dig up.

A Tiger in the Land of Dreams

29 August 2022 @ 7:37 pm

A look inside the 50 Watts edition of Tiger Tateishi's incredible A Tiger in the Land of Dreams A Tiger in the Land of Dreams by Tiger Tateishi Translated by Yosuke Kitazawa ISBN 9781957625003 32 pages, 7.5 x 10.25 inches, full color, hardcover Publication date: Fall 2022 (now shipping!) A Tiger in the Land of Dreams is the first English-language edition of a legendary picture book from 1984. Tiger Tateishi, well-known in the worlds of art and comics, takes us on a journey through a surreal land with Torakichi, a constantly-morphing green tiger. The artist saw this strange tiger as a combination of an animal and a plant. Suitable for all ages, but this is the type of book you buy for the dreamy artwork.

50 Watts Books - Our First Publications

12 April 2022 @ 10:05 pm

While running the bookstore over the last year, I've been working on four books at the top of my list of dream projects. These books have fascinated (and confused) me for years -- longtime followers of the blog might recognize some -- and I'm excited to put them into the world. To follow their progress and be alerted when preorders begin, sign up for the 50 Watts Books email list. I'll also keep this page up-to-date. Booksellers, please get in touch! I will be selling some rare books by Tiger Tateishi and Kiyoshi Awazu to raise printing funds. Animal Land Where There Are No People by Sybil and Katharine Corbet A 50 Watts Production (which has been in the works for 10 years): we've given a colorful twist to a book originally published in Scotlan

Posters by Ghobad Shiva

5 January 2022 @ 9:33 pm

(Find me at 50 Watts Books.) silk-screen prints from 1975 Posters by Ghobad Shiva (born 1940) found in the book Music Posters from Pre-Revolution Iran, 1960s-70s. The section opens with some quotes by Shiva: "Posters offer a vast field to every graphic designer. While you present the information, you find an opportunity to add your individual artistic and intellectual view, what you seldom enjoy in other graphic media." "I spend more time on designing a poster than I do on other graphic works because you send a poster into the streets, where it generates thought, for which a graphic designer is highly responsible." "I believe you must turn the voices and melodies of music into a visual format. This is an Eastern view. Eastern artists almost

Tomi Ungerer's Nonstop

13 October 2021 @ 6:42 pm

(Find me at 50 Watts Books.) How it begins From Tomi Ungerer's final picture book, Nonstop, published by Phaidon in 2020. Find it at 50 Watts Books or on Bookshop.org (I'm a regular affiliate there, not a bookstore affiliate). My summary: Vasco's shadow helps guide him through a crumbling world where "birds, butterflies, and rats were gone" and "flowers had turned into memories." Along the way he rescues Poco, the little green child of Nothing, and they eventually find a gigantic cake in the desert (a happy ending!). I love this book. How it ends

Latvian Hammer: ZEPS Moto’s Belt-Driven Yamaha MT-01

13 March 2026 @ 6:00 pm

In the world of electronic music, Girts Ozolins is a titan. As the founder of Erica Synths, he spends his days designing modular synthesizers that are as raw and uncompromising as the industrial soundscapes of his home in Riga, Latvia. But when the soldering iron is cold, Girts translates that same ...

Throwback Thursday—Done Right: Rick Hannah’s Kawasaki W650 Desert Sled

12 March 2026 @ 5:00 pm

My father was fond of the saying, “If you want a job done right, do it yourself.” And that’s the first thought that popped into my head when I saw this sublime Kawasaki W650 desert sled from England. It comes from London-based Rick Hannah, who builds under the amusing moniker of Dirty Dick's Motos.Ri...

Herzberg 12: A BMW R12 G/S from VTR Customs

11 March 2026 @ 6:00 pm

When BMW Motorrad unveiled the R12, the motorcycling world saw a cruiser-adjacent roadster with a massive 1,170 cc heart. But for those who remember the golden era of the Paris-Dakar, the silhouette seemed to scream for something more adventurous. The R12 G/S is BMW’s factory nod to that heritage, b...

Backcountry Ballistic: Ryan Turner’s KTM 500 EXC-F Six Days

10 March 2026 @ 5:00 am

For the crew at Mosko Moto, a motorcycle is less of a trophy and more of a passport. Based out of White Salmon, Washington, Mosko was founded on a singular, frustrated question: Why is there a chasm between the high-tech, weight-conscious gear used by mountaineers and the clunky, overbuilt luggage a...

The Hammer of the Gods: Our Favorite Harley-Davidson Knucklehead Customs

9 March 2026 @ 6:00 pm

If Harley-Davidson has a "holy grail" engine, the EL Knucklehead is undoubtedly it. Produced between 1936 and 1947, the Knucklehead— named for the distinct shape of its rocker boxes—represented a massive technological leap for the Milwaukee firm. It was Harley’s first production overhead-valve (OHV)...

Teutonic Titan: HB-Custom's BMW R69S

9 March 2026 @ 2:00 pm

In the windswept coastal town of Husum, Germany, often called the "Grey City by the Sea", the air is thick with salt and heritage. The Dirt Track Hero for the Street: Our Favorite Indian FTR Customs

7 March 2026 @ 7:00 pm

When Indian Motorcycle unveiled the FTR 1200 in 2019, it was a rare moment when a manufacturer actually listened to its fans. For years, we had begged for a street-legal version of the dominant FTR750 Scout Racer, and Indian delivered a high-spec, 120 hp V-twin, trellis-framed hooligan. It was a bik...

American Dream: MF Customs’ ‘Caddy’ Softail

6 March 2026 @ 7:00 pm

The 1999 Harley-Davidson Softail occupies a sweet spot in the Milwaukee timeline. It was the final year of the venerable 80-inch Evolution engine, a motor prized by purists for its mechanical simplicity, housed in a chassis that mimics the clean lines of a vintage hardtail. It is a canvas for those ...

Road Tested: XT9000 Carbon Trailhead Helmet by Scorpion

5 March 2026 @ 6:00 pm

Marketed towards the ‘serious adventure rider,’ and aptly named the Trailhead, Scorpion was pretty direct about the purpose of this lid, but what makes an adventure helmet an adventure helmet? The list is exhaustive, but in short, a good ADV helmet is like a multi-tool—it needs to be able to do a li...
