OÍR / February 2024 — The Fox Is Black Mixtape

1 February 2024 @ 3:21 pm

OÍR / February 2024 — The Fox Is Black Mixtape Download the Mixtape → Love is a lot of things. Intoxicating, messy, nourishing, consuming, fleeting. And just like love, this mix is a lot things, and it really shouldn’t work, but I think it does. I set out to create a mixtape that contained a multitude of perspectives on love, coming at it from a number of different angles. It really started off with Crystal Castles classic "Not In Love" as Robert Smith's vocals are incredible on it, and the way it builds at the end always gave me chills. From there I kept thinking of the Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman" as well as Grace Jones, so then figuring out how I m

Eagle Rock’s Dunsmoor Restaurant by Lovers Unite

31 January 2024 @ 5:00 pm

If there's one thing I miss about living in Los Angeles it's the caliber of amazing restaurants that continue to flourish there. A great example is Dunsmoor, the creation of chef Brian Dunsmoor, an Eagle Rock restaurant and wine bar that opened in late June 2022. But the space was really shaped by the creative genius of Lovers Unite, aka Karen Spector and Alan Koch. Lovers Unite describe their practice as an architecture and design studio creating one-of-a-kind homes and hospitality spaces. The work they've done for Dunsmoor is a balancing act between preserving and augmenting the gorgeous 1929 Spanish Revival building, really letting the space shine. I mean, look at those windows! It's a place where you want to sit languidly in the sun on a lazy Sunday with friends.

Rich, Colorful Photography by David Gomez-Maestre

31 January 2024 @ 1:00 pm

Paris-based photographer David Gomez-Maestre caught my eye thanks to his gorgeous, richly colored photos. Growing up in Alicante, Spain, he is inspired by the light of his hometown, Spanish folklore, and his childhood memories. His sense of color is next-level, often utilizing a palette that's reminiscent of the 60s and 70s. Think lots of deep reds, burnt oranges, limes, and brash turquoise tones. Gorgeous work. A Genre-Defying Essential Mix from DJ Python

24 January 2024 @ 8:11 pm

I love me a mix, especially when an artist truly does something unique and totally out-of-the-box. Enter DJ Python, who's musical style has been described as "futuristic reggaeton" who comes out of nowhere with the most eclectic mix of 2024, and maybe, ever?! The range of this mix is unheard of. He describes it as "60-plus edited songs and unreleased stuff from friends and myself" but this literally spans nearly ever genre you can imagine. I can't stop listening to this, and the ending, my god, it's maybe one of the most magical things I've ever heard. I hope you enjoy it!

Liam Lee Tufts Together Fantastic Seating and Tapestries

22 January 2024 @ 1:34 pm

What if you could sit in a fungi of microscopic proportions? Liam Lee makes dreams comes true, a New York artist is a furniture and textile designer who works in felted wool, crafting fantastical objects that look like the things you see in 70s science books. Vibrantly colored, oddly shaped, and beautiful to admire, his chairs and tapestries are wondrous objects. In an interview with Curbed, he loves the idea of his work being both desirable and repulsive. “I like that some people might be disgusted because you’re in this weird space where an object is either considered really beautiful or just this gross, unapproachable thing,” he says. “I want the viewer to approach it without any preconceived notions of what it is supposed to be.”

Kim Gordon Releases “BYE BYE” in Anticipation of New Album, ‘The Collective’

17 January 2024 @ 3:00 pm

I think Kim Gordon is one of the coolest people alive. If you're unfamiliar, she is well-known for being part of iconic rock band Sonic Youth, and since then, has gone on to be a writer, a painter, fashion designer, model, etc. 40 years alter and she's still making some of the hardest music out there. Her previous record No Home Record sounded like an amalgamation of electronic, hip-hop, and rock, creating a noisy mashup that is both hard to listen to and totally entrancing. Yesterday she announced her new record, The Collective, along with a music video for the song "BYE BYE." The video stars her daughter Coco Gordon Moore as a mysterious teen on the run from unknown forces. The track continues Gordon's electronic noise rock sound, messy and glitchy and great. Excited to see what she's cooked up on 8 March.

And before I start, I just wanted to tell you that you can get the latest coverage of Spectrum‘s most important beats, including AI, climate change, and robotics, by signing up for one of our free newsletters. Just go to spectrum.ieee.org/newsletters to subscribe. We all love our mobile devices where the progress of Moore’s Law has meant we’re able to pack an enormous amount of computing power in something that’s small enough that we can wear it as jewelery. But their Achilles heel is power. They eat up battery life requiring frequent battery changes or

How to Put a Data Center in a Shoebox

15 May 2024 @ 3:00 pm

Scientists have predicted that by 2040, almost 50 percent of the world’s electric power will be used in computing. What’s more, this projection was made before the sudden explosion of generative AI. The amount of computing resources used to train the largest AI models has been doubling roughly every 6 months for more than the past decade. At this rate, by 2030 training a single artificial-intelligence model would take one hundred times as much computing resources as the combined annual resources o

The other consults with businesses to help them achieve their sustainability goals. Simay Akar Employer AK Energy Consulting Title CEO

Startup Sends Bluetooth Into Low Earth Orbit

13 May 2024 @ 7:54 pm

A recent Bluetooth connection between a device on Earth and a satellite in orbit signals a potential new space race—this time, for global location-tracking networks.Seattle-based startup Hubble Network announced today that it had a letter of understanding with San Francisco-based startup Life360 to develop a global, satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) tracking system. The announcement follows on the heels of

Disney's Robots Use Rockets to Stick the Landing

12 May 2024 @ 1:00 pm

It’s hard to think of a more dramatic way to make an entrance than falling from the sky. While it certainly happens often enough on the silver screen, whether or not it can be done in real life is a tantalizing challenge for our entertainment robotics team at Disney Research.Falling is tricky for two reasons. The first and most obvious is what Douglas Adams referred to as “the sudden stop at the end.” Every second of free fall means another 9.8 m/s of velocity, and that can quickly add up to an extremely difficult energy dissipation problem. The other tricky thing about falling, especially for terrestrial animals like us, is that our normal methods for controlling our orientation disappear. We are used to relying on contact f

The New Shadow Hand Can Take a Beating

10 May 2024 @ 2:00 pm

For years, Shadow Robot Company’s Shadow Hand has arguably been the gold standard for robotic manipulation. Beautiful and expensive, it is able to mimic the form factor and functionality of human hands, which has made it ideal for complex tasks. I’ve personally experienced how amazing it is to use Shadow Hands in a teleoperation context, and it’s hard to imagine anything better. The problem with the original Shadow hand was (and still is) fragility. In a research environment, this has been fine, except that research is changing: Roboticists no longer carefully program manipulation tasks by, uh, hand. Now it’s all about machine learning, in which you need robotic hands to massively fail over and

Commercial Space Stations Approach Launch Phase

10 May 2024 @ 1:00 pm

A changing of the guard in space stations is on the horizon as private companies work toward providing new opportunities for science, commerce, and tourism in outer space.Blue Origin is one of a number of private-sector actors aiming to harbor commercial activities in low Earth orbit (LEO) as the creaking and leaking International Space Station (ISS) approaches its drawdown. Partners in Blue Origin’s Orbital Reef program, including firms Redwire, Sierra Space, and Boeing, are

5 New Ways to Maximize Your Hardware Security Resilience

9 May 2024 @ 3:48 pm

Connected vehicles offer a range of benefits, such as real-time data sharing, app-to-car connectivity, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and critical safety features like location tracking, remote parking, and in-vehicle infotainment systems (IVIs). These advancements aim to enhance the overall driving and riding experience. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that equipping vehicles with smart features also exposes them to potential cyberattacks. These attacks can result in customer data leakage or even compromise critical safety functionalities. It’s expected to discover vulnerabilities after the product is released, which could have been easily prevented. For instance, as reported by Bloomberg, a recent increase in car thefts was attributed to the absence of anti-theft computer chips in vehicle critical systems. Therefore, it is imperative to proac

Access and modify image generator on website

16 May 2024 @ 3:33 pm

I'm curious if it's possible to modify this generator that exports a png image from user input. The output image is ultra-low resolution. I'm wondering if the generator can be modified to output a higher-resolution image. The perfect scenario would be to download the font used in the image or bits of the font and piece them together afterwards. P.S. I'm only interested in the font. With a high-resolution image, I can trace the characters and make a font out of them, or just get the complete font file if it's obtainable :)

PowerShell script to determine whether "this" computer is activated through Active Directory

16 May 2024 @ 3:10 pm

I run a set of tools on Windows machines, both domain-joined and stand-alone. One of the tools involves offline activation using a CAC. I would like to write into my script a switch that will bypass that tool if the target machine is already activated through AD, and run it if not. Is there a reliable place in WMI that will allow me to do this? Google AI search gave me this: Get-WmiObject -Class SoftwareLicensingService | Select-Object -ExpandProperty ActivationMethod but there is apparently no "ActivationMethod" property in SoftwareLicensingService.

EXIFTOOL, track creation date, and timezone

16 May 2024 @ 3:00 pm

I am trying to make sense of the QuickTime/TrackCreateDate value obtained for a file created by camera recording on an iPhone 15, latest OS. In this case, I was in Japan at the time. According to the GetInfo function on Mac when looking at this file (from Photos), the movie was created Tuesday, March 5, 2024, 6:42 PM. (Fairly certain that was (or approx) the local time in Japan when the video was taken. Yesterday (May 15), I exported that file (and many others) to external files so they can be included in a video I want to make. I have media from lots of sources (iPhone, 360 camera, drone) so the goal is to name these files in a logical sense that makes it obvious what was teken when (in relation to the others in the set). Using EXIFTOOL (which I think is my best option here), I get the following values. > exiftool -ee -j -g -c '%.6f -api quicktimeutc' '/pathToFile.mov'|grep Date "FileModifyDate": "2024:03:05 18:42:57-05:00&q

Can I use the Share menu to go to a file in the Finder?

16 May 2024 @ 2:13 pm

The "Share" menu options in mac os seem to be limited to the "Share menu items" extensions under System settings. These offer actions like "Contact suggestions", "Add to reading list", "Airdrop", etc.: mostly actions that are limited to specific apps. I want to instead go to the shared item in the Finder, so that I have much more flexibility and control over what I want to do with it. Is there any way to add a new "Finder" item to the Sharing Extensions that lets me show the shared file in Finder? A concrete example: I've just taken a screenshot using Shift+Cmd+4. It's saved to my Desktop folder, but how do I get to the file, so that I can move it to another location, or rename it, or whatever I want to do with the file? A thumbnail of the screenshot briefly appears in the lower right corner of the screen, and if I click on that, it opens in a window, which seems to be a Quick Look window. It has options at the top o

Wix does not allow to add NS records

16 May 2024 @ 2:01 pm

I want to delegate internal.infraheads.com to my internal nameservers, but I depend on Wix as they enforce the use of their NS servers. And they don't support adding NS records required for NS delegation. What can I do in this situation except move away from Wix?

FTP server maxes out at 4Mbit upload speed, despite the internet connection being 50Mbit. Why?

16 May 2024 @ 12:32 pm

Server ISP connection is 50/50 Mbit fiber (verified with speedtests) Remote ISP connection is 100/100 Mbit fiber (verified with speedtests). Only large files are transfered (1GB+) All ethernet cables, no Wifi anywhere. The FTP server runs on an Zyxel NSA325 v2 NSA. When server uploads, I'm maxing out at 4 Mbit (550KB). When downloading I'm maxing at 7,5 Mbit (900KB). Tested on multiple devices/clients with similar results. Anyone know why it's so slow? I'm not expecting full 50Mbit, but less than a tenth of capactity is obviously not correct at all. I have tried googling the Zyxel device, but can't find anyone else complaining about slow speeds from it. Edit: The speeds listed above are between two European countries (large distance). I now have tested close physical location with SAME ISP and got 10Mbit (1,3MB) and 12Mbit (1,5MB). Still only 1/5th of capacity...

Bootable USB not detected in BIOS menu

16 May 2024 @ 12:31 pm

This is honestly embarrassing for me. I'm currently trying to switch from NixOS back to Void Linux after trying the distribution for a few months now. I got the Void .iso file, created a bootable USB drive with the dd command on a freshly bought 16GB Sandisk drive. The laptop itself is a Dell Latitude 7310. Problem is, the BIOS doesn't detect the USB drive at all. Safe mode is already disabled and the only option that I'm presented with in the BIOS setup is to add manually the USD drive myself - BIOS list options. It's strange because this is the first time happening on this particular laptop. I've installed Void, Guix and even FreeBSD on this one before and never had this issue. Anyone got any tips? The drive itself was formatted with mkfs.vfat before dd was used for the .iso file, in case that's helpful.

Lookup in excel from a range and returning the match

16 May 2024 @ 10:12 am

I am trying to work on this for quite a few days for now. I want to take out the middle names from last name. I have possible list of middle names and a list of last names. I am trying to look up the middle names and get them separated. I also have to do a length search for each record to see which middle name is fitting best because it is possible in some cases more them one middle name can match. The length of middle name column is just for information purpose, as it is taking the length with one space at the end. enter image description here

ffmpeg creates out-of-sync and glitchy audio when using concatenate filter to cut segments of video

26 April 2024 @ 5:16 pm

I have created an artificial test case where I want to have red + middle C, green + middle D, and blue + middle E each for 2.5 seconds, cut down to each for 1.5 seconds. This is a simplification of my real video file, which I am unable to share. ffmpeg version info: ffmpeg version 6.1.1 Copyright (c) 2000-2023 the FFmpeg developers built with Apple clang version 15.0.0 (clang-1500.1.0.2.5) configuration: --prefix=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/ffmpeg/6.1.1_2 --enable-shared --enable-pthreads --enable-version3 --cc=clang --host-cflags= --host-ldflags='-Wl,-ld_classic' --enable-ffplay --enable-gnutls --enable-gpl --enable-libaom --enable-libaribb24 --enable-libbluray --enable-libdav1d --enable-libharfbuzz --enable-libjxl --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopus --enable-librav1e --enable-librist --enable-librubberband --enable-libsnappy --enable-libsrt --enable-libssh --enable-libsvtav1 --enable-libtesseract --enable-libtheora --enable-libvidstab --enable-libvmaf --enable-lib
