Derived from the Kannada word Nalme, meaning affection, warmth, and heartfelt belonging, the house is envisioned as an extension of the lives it shelters. Designed for a family seeking simplicity, comfort, and a deep connection to nature, the project explores how light, craft, and materiality can transform everyday living into a meaningful experience.

Casa do Alpendre was developed from a “blank slate” on an empty plot in Quinta da Coutada, in Vila Franca de Xira. This place is characterised by a wide architectural diversity, lacking a uniform language or any evident relationship between the buildings. Nearby, the presence of an industrial facility also stands out, marked by large roof structures and façades clad in different types of metal sheeting.

What architecture leaves in the ground outlasts what it puts in the air. A demolished building disappears from the skyline in a matter of days, but its foundations remain embedded in the soil for generations. The contamination caused by an industrial complex does not clear when the complex is torn down. The legal boundaries inscribed across colonial territory do not dissolve when the colonial administration ends. The ground holds what architecture quickly forgets.

Set quietly within a typical suburban streetscape, the house rests alongside familiarity, carefully understated and modestly refined. Composed of Colorbond roofing, recycled brickwork, and timber shiplap cladding, its presence is not asserted, but assembled from what feels appropriate, aligning with the street rather than imposing upon it.

In 2021, ArchDaily (Mexico) published a residence designed and built for themselves by architects, Brenda Nelson & Tom van den Bout of NV/design.architecture, when they relocated from Brooklyn, New York to Oaxaca, Mexico. Tom's parents soon elected to build a house across the street, Casa Cielo. The house was completed in 2025.
