Was it actually a thing in Britain “back in the day” for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories?

7 May 2026 @ 10:04 pm

I’ve heard older relatives mention it like it was almost seen as practical, cheaper, or even preferable to years of dental work. If that was a real trend, does anyone think “Turkey teeth” is the modern equivalent chasing a perfect smile now, even if it means doing something drastic to otherwise workable teeth? Curious whether this is genuine social history, regional/class-based, or mostly myth and whether we’re basically repeating the same mentality in a different form. Either way, I think it’s a horrible thing to do 😂😂😂 just a lifetime of issues. Yes braces are expensive and painful initially but they’re cheaper in the long run. submitted by /u/Top_Mirror211 to r/AskUK

In these days of celebs often being easy targets, which UK celebs have gained your respect in meeting them, actions - or something you've learned about them?

7 May 2026 @ 9:13 pm

I have no personal insight into any UK celebs, but a few I admire are Joanna "Lum Lum" Lumley, who I admire for her promotion of the Gurkhas, and her ability to send herself up. Rupert Grint - for his 2 x Ed Sheeran videos where he took a backseat and sent himself up as a stalker. And Lewis Hamilton - who I'm not a huge fan of, but respect for donating £20m in a single year to charities. submitted by /u/DonkeyOT65 to r/AskUK [link] [comments]

[Post Match Thread] Aston Villa 4-0 Nottingham Forest (Europa League) [4-1]

7 May 2026 @ 9:03 pm

Aston Villa have done it! Wow. We are in the final of the Europa League. It was utter dominance from the first minute, Forest started with 2 forwards and we just ran them down in midfield. Watkins scored the first goal as Buendia did amazing footwork to beat his defenders and send in a low cross. In the second half we just dominated more. Torres was pulled down and we won a penalty, which Buendia converted. Then McGinn scored a brace with two very similar goals as Forest was left open. MOTM goes to McGinn and Buendia, these two ran the show and won us the game. McGinn for pressing, chance creation and conversion. Buendia, for being literally the Argentianian Messi and being everywhere across the pitch. We face Freiburg in a fortnight as they beat Braga 3-1 today sending them to the final. submitted by /u/SecretApe to

What are the exact rules about campaign materials at polling places?

7 May 2026 @ 7:56 pm

My husband went to vote today and immediately next to the door of the polling place (you can see the sign through the glass) was this Reform sign. Because it’s outside, is this legal? It just didn’t sit right. Wanted to be clear about the actual rules as I could find numbers on any distance etc. This is in Scotland, btw. submitted by /u/danjibbles to r/AskBrits [link] [comments]

Reform UK’s vile threat to put asylum-seeker detention centres in Green-run areas is pure, petty Trumpism in action – 21 full-throated objections

5 May 2026 @ 9:55 am

In their effort to be more Trump, the Reform Party is copying his petty policy of punishing areas that don’t vote for him. In Trump’s case, he has pulled funding from Democratic states and from bodies that are statistically more likely to help people in Dem areas. Reform hasn’t announced that policy yet, but they […] The post Reform UK’s vile threat to put asylum-seeker detention centres in Green-run areas is pure, petty Trumpism in action – 21 full-throated objections appeared first on The Poke.
