Keeping tabs on the UK’s parliaments & assemblies

The best of both worlds: combining parliamentary video and official records

23 July 2025 @ 8:00 am

Transforming and publishing official Parliamentary transcripts is one of the key activities of parliamentary monitoring organisations (PMOs)  — in our case, that means running our website TheyWorkForYou, but there are many organisations around the world doing the same for their own parliaments.  Building on top of transcripts means that PMOs can focus their time on…

Election reform: a solid start with work ahead

22 July 2025 @ 8:15 am

We don’t talk a lot about elections at mySociety: we see our unique contribution as being about the democracy between elections, with a focus on how democratic institutions work (sometimes how they can work better), and the connections between the public and those institutions. But whatever part of the democratic system you care about, elections…

The Climate Coalition Mass Lobby: #ActNowChangeForever

21 July 2025 @ 2:05 pm

Here at mySociety, we’ve built a number of tools around data and the climate: CAPE, the Climate Action Plans Explorer; the Council Climate Action Scorecards, and, most recently, Local Intelligence Hub, which allows you to look at climate-relevant data in your own area and compare it with the nation as a whole. All these sites…

An international community working to ensure AI is deployed for the good of all

16 July 2025 @ 8:01 am

TICTeC, our Impacts of Civic Technology conference, has been running since 2015. Over the years, we’ve seen shifts within both tech and democracy that have been reflected as priority topics: from the foundational (and evergreen) question of ‘how can you assess the value of civic technology if you don’t measure its impacts?’, to the rise…

We’ve also added several votes from the 2019-2024 parliament retrospectively when creating a voting policy in a new…

How FOI can help build a case for pushback

8 July 2025 @ 8:34 am

Over the past few weeks we’ve seen public debate and campaigning around the government’s proposed cuts to PIP — benefits that are intended to ease the additional costs of living that come with being disabled.  The Bill was voted through, but only once it was agreed that the proposed changes to PIP eligibility would be…

WhoFundsThem Update: July 2025

2 July 2025 @ 10:33 am

mySociety’s WhoFundsThem work combines technology and volunteers to create better data and visibility on money in politics. We’ve published a report of what we’ve learned, given evidence in Parliament, and made more information available on TheyWorkForYou.  This update covers some recently declared freebies, cash for questions paper trails, paid membership of APPGs, and how we…

When MPs/Peers should use FOI rather than Parliamentary Questions

1 July 2025 @ 8:46 am

Parliamentarians (MPs and Peers) have access to two different systems of getting information from the government.  As members of Parliament,  they can use Parliamentary Questions (PQs) to ask questions and receive information from government ministers. They also have the same rights as everyone else to access information from public authorities through the Freedom of Information…

ATI day in Mechelen

23 June 2025 @ 8:45 am

Transparency is always a strong theme at TICTeC, and since so many members of the Access to Information Network were in town for the conference, we thought we’d take the opportunity to meet up.  And so, the day after, several people who run Freedom of Information sites came together in an airy attic room to…

TICTeC 2025: “Energy, open exchanges, and motivation to keep pushing forward tech for democracy”

19 June 2025 @ 12:44 pm

TICTeC is wrapped up for another year. The roller banners are stowed away, the lanyards saved for next year, and now we’re back home from Belgium with memories, insights and enough hope to keep us going ’til next time.  It’s always energising to come together with the global civic tech community and share everything we’ve…

Rubbish not collected left here for weeks, 30th July

30 July 2025 @ 4:48 pm

This rubbish on Walworth Road outside Tankard pub - presumably from the pub? Has either not been collected or isn’t supposed to be there. It’s been there for at least a week - attracting more rubbish and litter. It is really depressing as a resident to walk past this every day. Can it be removed and there be an investigation into why it is there if it is not supposed to be and if dumping rubbish on the pavement is how it is put out for collection can levels of service be improved to make sure it doesn’t just sit there or some other arrangement be considered. Someone is disposing of organic waste in the bin meant for non-recyclable and non-organic waste, 30th July

30 July 2025 @ 4:28 pm

There has been a persistent strong odor of organic waste coming from the trash bin located at the entrance of Shere House, apartments 24 to 31. Although this bin is designated ONLY for non-organic and non-recyclable waste, someone appears to be disposing of organic waste there. It would be advisable to put up a notice or, alternatively, check the security cameras to see what is happening. The smell is very unpleasant, attracts flies, and negatively affects the health of residents. Nearest road to the pin placed on the map (automatically generated by OpenStreetMap): Great Dover Street, The Borough, London Report on FixMyStreet

Poor Cleaning Conditions in the Common Areas of Shere House (Apartments 24 to 31), 30th July

30 July 2025 @ 4:22 pm

The internal common areas of the apartment block covering units 24 to 31 at Shere House are in poor condition — dirty and with insufficient cleaning maintenance. In front of some of the apartments, there are heavy dirt stains, apparently from placing rubbish bags, as well as visible trails of dripping waste along the staircases. These stains have not been properly cleaned and are now forming permanent marks throughout the building, in addition to causing an unpleasant odor. Furthermore, the windows are dirty and covered in cobwebs, and the walls also show cobwebs and some mold spots. To make matters worse, it seems that one of the apartments is undergoing renovation, and the common areas have been left with sand, white dust, and nails scattered on the floor — all clear signs that cleaning maintenance has been poor. The staircases, walls, windows, floors, apartment entrances, and handrails are all in need of a deep cleaning. This situation seems to result mainly from insu
